Houston emerges as global geothermal leader as oil and gas expertise finds new application

Texas is rapidly emerging as a global leader in next-generation geothermal energy, with Houston at the center of the industry’s transformation.

Long recognized as the energy capital of the world, the region is leveraging decades of expertise in drilling, subsurface engineering, manufacturing, energy services, digital technologies and project finance to accelerate the commercialization of geothermal at unprecedented speed. Rather than building a new industry from scratch, Texas is repurposing its globally recognized energy workforce, infrastructure and industrial supply chains to unlock reliable, 24/7 carbon-free power.

That momentum is no accident. Matt Welch, Executive Vice President of the Texas Geothermal Energy Alliance explains: “Texas is proving that geothermal is happening now, and it’s happening here. In just the past few years, we’ve seen drilling costs fall, pilot projects turn into commercial ventures and our state’s oil-and-gas workforce find a natural second act in geothermal development. None of that happens by accident.” He adds, “Texas Legislature gave the geothermal industry exactly what it needed: regulatory certainty. Clear permitting pathways and a regulatory framework built on decades of subsurface expertise told developers this state was serious about competing for geothermal investment.”

Houston has become home to an expanding cluster of geothermal companies, including Hephae Energy Technology, Sage Geosystems, Fervo Energy, XGS Energy, Quaise Energy and GA Drilling. Together with engineering, drilling, manufacturing and service companies, they are proving that the same expertise that transformed unconventional oil and gas can now unlock geothermal resources at commercial scale.

Houston’s strength extends beyond technology developers to the industrial supply chain that supports them. Together, these capabilities demonstrate how Texas’s industrial ecosystem enables companies to rapidly commercialize geothermal technologies.

This momentum is reinforced by a highly collaborative innovation ecosystem. Universities, national laboratories, technology accelerators and major energy companies are working alongside emerging geothermal developers. An example is the work underway at Texas A&M University. Dr. Roman Shor, associate professor, explains: “Research at Texas A&M is advancing hybrid drilling technologies that integrate conventional rotary drilling with novel rock-breaking approaches. Additive manufacturing is becoming a key enabler of these designs, allowing engineers to rethink the drill bit from the inside out.” This is just one example of how collaborative research across the consortium is helping reduce technology development timelines to accelerate commercialization.

Houston’s leadership is also reflected in its growing calendar of geothermal events, including the Geothermal Rising Conference being held Sept. 20-23 at the Marriott Marquis. As demand grows for baseload energy to power communities, industry and data centers, Texas is demonstrating that the capabilities built over generations can drive the next era of energy innovation.
