The Honorable Chris Wright
Secretary
U.S. Department of Energy
1000 Independence Ave. SW
Washington, D.C. 20585
Dear Secretary Wright,
I write to commend you and President Trump for your commitment to advancing next-generation geothermal energy and reaffirming America’s leadership in energy innovation.(1) Your focus on unlocking this reliable and abundant domestic resource is a significant step toward securing our nation’s energy dominance.
This practical approach to geothermal development is essential to the “all of the above” energy strategy America needs. The Trump Administration recognizes that true energy abundance and grid resilience comes from using every resource at our disposal—from our world-class oil and gas reserves to next-generation sources that can deliver around-the-clock baseload power.
Geothermal energy is a perfect fit for this commonsense strategy.
Texas is uniquely positioned to lead this next phase of America’s energy revolution. Our state’s historic leadership in the oil and gas industry has created a foundation of expertise, technology, and infrastructure that is unparalleled anywhere in the world. The very skills that made Texas an energy giant – directional drilling, subsurface imaging, and reservoir management – are precisely the capabilities required to build a robust geothermal industry.(2) Our experienced workforce of geologists, engineers, and researchers stands ready to apply their talents to this new frontier, ensuring a seamless and rapid expansion of American energy production.
- Sophia Bauer, Trump administration’s policies support rapid growth of geothermal power in the United States with 1.2 GW planned by end of term, GLOBAL ENERGY MONITOR (Mar. 2025)
- Haley Samsel, Geothermal energy is on the cusp of taking off in Texas. TCU professor explains how, THE FORT WORTH REPORT (Feb. 14, 2022).
The economic impact of this initiative will be transformative. By unleashing private-sector innovation in geothermal energy, we can create thousands of high-paying jobs, attract billions in domestic investment, and strengthen local economies across Texas. Furthermore, developing firm, dispatchable power sources like geothermal will enhance the reliability of the grid, protecting our citizens and businesses from the vulnerabilities of intermittent power. This is a clear path toward a more prosperous and secure America.
I urge the Department of Energy to utilize Texas’ unique advantage in deploying these next generation projects, so that Geothermal Power can become another pillar of American Energy leadership.
Thank you for your leadership on this critical issue. My office looks forward to working with you and the Department of Energy to cut burdensome regulations and clear the way for this exciting new chapter in American energy leadership. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of assistance to you.
In God we trust,
Roger Williams
Member of Congress
